Essexville-Garber 2018 TE/WR Ben VanSumeren just finished his senior season at Garber which turned out being one of the best seasons ever across the state.

VanSumeren finished his senior season with an incredible 85 receptions which are good enough to finish tied 9th overall along with Dominique Douglas of Murray-Wright. Where VanSumeren separates himself from the pack is that all the players above him in the record book have played 10-14 games which all 85 catches from VanSumeren have been from the regular season.

For the season VanSumeren had 1,259 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. On the ground VanSumeren has 371 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns.

On Friday at 5pm, Ben VanSumeren will decide on where's going to be playing the next 3-5 years in college at the Bay Area Family Y.

The former Western Michigan commit holds offers from; Iowa, Iowa State, Missouri, Minnesota, Air Force, and a handful of MAC programs.

Essexville-Garber Head Coach, Jake Coquillard was able to talk a bit about his incredible senior.

VanSumeren emerged on our radar 2 year ago as a phenomenal athlete before he turned into a 6'3" 235 lbs total package as a TE/WR. Coquillard commented on VanSumeren's growth, "Ben’s is an absolute relentless workout warrior! He lifts twice a day if he can and he understands that if he wants to be the best, you have to put in the hard work. He also, catches 100 passes every day, eats 6,000 calories a day and goes to bed usually around 9pm. He sleeps with a football, he buckles a football and buckles it in to the passenger seat of his car. He wants to be the best!"

The Dukes playmaker has been utilized in just about every situation this year as VanSumeren has shown to be a team player who does everything and more that is asked of him, Coquillard explained, "Ben is such an unselfish player. He can and has played QB, RB and WR. Safety, DE and LB on defense. He always tells me, I’m about the team coach put me where it best helps the team. But, of course, he relishes the ball in his hands!"

VanSumeren had 85 catches for 1,259 yards, and 13 touchdowns as a Senior, Coquillard shared his insight why VanSumeren had the success he did, "His route running is exceptional, he has GREAT hands and his size and strength are off the charts. Throw in his 40 inch vertical jump and he is a matchup nightmare and he will be immediately in college as well!"

Garber has had a few great players walk their halls, but none as prominent as VanSumeren who should leave a lasting impression on everyone associated with the program this year and for a few years after, Coquillard provided his thoughts of the effect VanSumeren will have at Garber, "I think that the person he is and the great family he has grown up under are amazing. The community has rallied around him and the team, the school all knows and genuinely likes him, because he is a caring young man with a big heart. I mean, he will go down as the best athlete/football player to ever play at Essexville Garber, so he will be sorely missed, but for our future players I hope that they take in how hard he has worked to get what he wants and that can be a focal point for our Garber Football Program for years to come."
